MET Ball 2013: Punk Goes Couture
The Costume Institute Gala Benefit, otherwise known as the MET Ball is the event of the year in the fashion world. This year’s event was deemed “Punk: Chaos to Couture” and was chaired by Rooney Mara, Moda Operandi Creative Director Lauren Santo Domingo, Givenchy designer Riccardo Tisci and the editor in chief of Vogue, HRH Anna Wintour. With an airtight guest list overseen by Mrs. Wintour, naturally, the expectations are high - both for the event itself and for the wardrobe choices that it inspires. The red carpet is a runway and it is commonplace to see designers dress and display their “dates,” often muses or spokespeople for the brands. These were my choices for the best dressed of the evening.
Sarah Jessica Parker, wearing arguably the most over the top outfit of the evening (sorry, Madge!), rocks it 100%. You need to be confident to wear something like this but SJP has the poise and enough years playing Carrie Bradshaw to pull it off. Love the clashing patterns, the headpiece, the tulle - she looks like a punk princess.
Hathaway reportedly had to change her look last minute because it was too similar to Les Mis co-star Amanda Seyfriend but honey, is it ever working for her. She looks SEXY. The burnout, tight dress, the platinum, quaffed hair… I am loving this bold, punky Anne – can we keep her?
Ok, it’s not even really fair, Gisele could wear fabric scraps and some chain link and make it look sexy (oh wait…). She is radiant. Those shoes are fabulous. And those legs… enough already! The only thing I would’ve liked to see was a bolder hairstyle or makeup look but I suppose we do need to stick to what we do best and Gisele is a natural beauty (sigh).
Usually I find myself bored by Nina’s fashion decisions but this is great! I love the pant-dress look - sometimes it is difficult for young starlets to justify pants, especially at a red-tie gala like this but Dobrev takes a risk, chooses the best of both worlds and she stuns as a result.
I LOVE this girl. Paloma Faith, took a risk, she was bold, she owned this theme. The gloved dress was stunning, the headpiece could make the Windsors green with envy and her attitude was on point.
It can be difficult for the gentlemen to dress to theme at events like these but Eddie Redmayne looks dashing in a blue Burberry suit and adds his little touch of punk with a skull pocket hanky. The blue adds a twist to the classic suit and I’m a sucker for a man in a bowtie.
A flash of Schiaparelli Pink from last year’s theme, updated to punk. Bosworth in Balmain is hitting all the right spots as usual. A great example of how to dress to theme without feeling uncomfortable and, as she wore this dress to the afterparty too, a great choice of styling for fancy to casual.
I’m biased… RHW is my fashion icon. But this is why. She gets it right every time. Great colour on her. Slicked back crown hair. Simple makeup. Glamorous? Check. Flattering? Check. Touch of punk? Check.
I know it’s not punk and maybe it’s my obsession with D&G’s gilded collection but I think Katy Perry looked extraordinary. Love the burgundy lips (also spotted on Miranda Kerr, amongst others). Some different shoes that didn’t cut her off at the ankle would do a world of good though.
Punk Royalty. Real life couple Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower aren’t afraid to get a little edgy. I love how he just went for it, earrings and everything… looking a little less gentlemanly never worked so well. Lily’s makeup, her dress, the leather, the hair streaks - it could’ve been too much but because she looks so comfortable and not done up or forceful at all, she cannot rock any harder.
