Trendiness can be a massive money sink and a huge environmental waste if you try to keep up year-over-year, season-over-season. If you notice anything about this list, notice that many of the trends I’m including have to do with accessories or a couple bold pieces. I’m a big believer in maintaining a classic wardrobe, filled with high-quality, timeless staples. While you’ll always look chic with classic looks, you can still keep your wardrobe fresh by rotating in a few new “trendy” accessories from affordable retailers each year. The list below are five of my favourite trends that can liven up a slightly outdated wardrobe for fall 2018.

Corduroy Reimagined

It took me a little while to get on board the 70s revival train - it always felt a little too much like the vibe of my Nana’s living room. However, upon acclimatization, I can now happily say I am a convert and aspiring hippy. Burnt yellows, deep mustards, rich burgundys and wide legged pants - sign me up! Corduroy is the latest in the string of 70s fan favourites, but it’s not just for bellbottoms. Mix in corduroy as a jacket, pinafore dress or slim trouser and pair with fabrics such as leather, jean or lace for a fresh take on a 50 year old classic.  

V for V-Cut Slingback

I love a good slingback - I find them to be such an elegant cut of shoe. Lately, slingback flats have been popping up out of the woodwork, especially in this higher-coverage V-cut version. While it is a bit of an ugly-chic trend, I think this shoe will end up becoming a classic. And most importantly, they can go with anything from jeans to dresses, to slacks and skirts. Wear them to work with a midi pleated skirt and oversized sweater.  

Not a Shrinking Violet 

Pantone’s colour of the year for 2018 was a bold Ultraviolet, inspired by innovators and future-minded thinkers. Although the hue wasn’t as predominant in the fall 2018 runway collections as say, Millennial pink or Gen Y Yellow, Ultraviolet did make a splash in the evening wear portion of major collections such as Tibi, Anna Sui and Marc Jacobs. This has trickled down the fast-fashion chain, with ready-made, affordable violet evening wear for all of your upcoming Holiday events and dinners. 

To Shell With It

Tortoiseshell has always been a favourite material of mine. It is very Parisian and instantly elevates an outfit. Rather than the traditional tortoiseshell glasses, try Fall 2018’s take on tortoise - the resin earrings. Pair with a Breton striped top, wide-legged dark wash jeans and simple heels for a chic and timeless look that’s perfect for running errands, dinner with friends, or a Friday at work.  

Neck in Neck(Scarves)

A silk-printed scarf is a very versatile option to liven up a basic outfit. Wear it Boy Scout style, a la Liz Taylor, or like a glamorous 40s film star on cooler fall days. My favourite way to wear a silk scarf is with an all-black look -slim cut jeans, tight mockneck long-sleeve, and tall black booties for those Audrey Hepburn vibes.
