Fall 2018 NYFW Trendspotting

Fall 2018 NYFW Trendspotting

New York Fashion Week kickstarts the marathon known in the fashion world as Fashion Month - a whirlwind tour of the Big Apple, London, Paris and Rome. Typically more subdued and certainly more commercially applicable than the European showings, NYFW is the litmus test for the trends to come. Typically more sporty and casual, this year’s presentations seemed to lean more into heritage, a la London.

The 70s influence is still going strong this season with a very warm colour palette, flowy pieces, fringing and a real counter-culture vibe in the form of inclusivity and diversity. I’ve have also loved the impact that combining mens and womenswear shows has had on the clothing itself. We’re seeing a lot of androgyny, the rise of the “beaufille,” and the demise of frills and glitter (finally!). Interesting shapes, cuts and fabric combinations have been the result. Otherwise, I am also enjoying the British influence, with lots of plaids, pattern mixing and emphasis on unique outerwear.

Take a look through a few of the other standout trends of NYFW:

Colonial Steampunk

Is it redundant to call a steampunk outfit colonial? Who knows... all I know for sure is that I am DIGGING this trend and can definitely see it popping up in a movie wardrobe or two.

Camo, Cheetah, and Tartan, Oh My!

If there was one trend (okay... three I suppose) that truly dominated the runways in New York this season, it was camo, cheetah and tartan patterns, worn separate or together (a la Michael Kors).

50 Shades of Red

An evolution of the monochrome outfits championed by the Kardashians and dominating your Instagram feed as of late, comes the newest incarnation - hue styling... Demonstrated here with a pink and red pairing.

Flat Ambition

Happy to report the flat shoe trend which originated with the sneaker obsession a few seasons ago is still going strong. Stylish and comfortable, can't get better than that.

Bold Trenches

To maximize the effectiveness of the bold trench, keep the rest of your outfit simple and let the outerwear do the talking. For best results, mix with other trends on this list (pink + red combos, canary yellow, camo, cheetah, tartan or holographic).

Canary Yellow

Move aside Pantone Ultraviolet, it looks like we've got a new colour king in town. Canary yellow ruled the roost at NYFW, often paired with dull greens and blues for a 70s vibe.

Holographic

It's 2018... we don't have flying cars yet but you can still get your futurism fix with these holographic pieces. Personally, I'm loving it as a raincoat.

Diversity, Inclusivity and Female Empowerment!

A trend that will never go out of style! Echoing the seismic shifts happening with campaigns such as #MeToo and Times Up, we're seeing a long awaiting shift towards representation on the runway with race, weight, and age, as well as messages of gender diversity and female empowerment (check out that Tom Ford Pussy Power bag!).

Favourite Shows

A few of my favourite collections this season - I loved them for their cuts, cohesion, fabrics and stories.
